Sitting aside in a quiet corner of a rowdy little bar in New York City, the mercenary’s gaze flicks to the TV – barely visible through the crowd of drunken men & women – as the ball drops, & with a wry smile he lifts his half-filled glass in a salute to nothing & no one in particular.
“Happy new year.” Clint mutters to himself, placing the glass back down on the table with a quiet thud. For a moment he’s caught up in old & faded memories, a small, almost sincere, smile crossing his lips as he thought about days & people long since passed. Then, shaking himself from his reverie, he pushes himself away from the table & stands, downing the last of his drink. He is numb to the merriment & festivities going on mere feet away, ignoring the other patrons of the bar as he slowly slips on his jacket, placing a few dollars tip on the table before taking his leave, stepping out into the cold embrace of a new year.
“That’s not your job. That’s never anyone’s job. People have to learn for themselves, it’s the only way they do learn. It’s the only way you get taught the important things, because no one can teach them to you. Mistakes make us, & that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Making mistakes means you learned.”
“Death never sounded so poetic—— what are you doing here?” The assassin asks, tone low & cold as he presses the gun more firmly against the back of her head. “& I’d like a straight answer t’ that, if you wouldn’t mind.”

Something that needs to be understood from the get-go is THIS PORTRAYAL OF CLINT BARTON IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH SHIELD OR THE AVENGERS. I have been writing this AU for a very long time & I simply will not tolerate people blatantly ignoring the story & characterization I have developed; it has happened in the past, & if I have to deal with it now you will be unfollowed, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

This is a remake of mercenary-with-wings. I have been developing this character for a long time, & I take a lot of pride in this portrayal. All the headcanons & meta on this blog were developed by me. I use Charlie Hunnam as an FC for Clint; all the icons I use can be found on Hollow-Art or Tumblr. The graphics, banners, & other edits I use on this blog are my own.

I lightly format my threads, nothing seriously detailed, but if it bothers you please let me know. I do use icons but you don't have to. Typically I'll write anywhere from a few sentences to several paragraphs, but all I desire of my partner is enough to build a reply off of. I try to reply within a week, though I do run multiple accounts & I am a college student so I might be a little spotty when it comes to activity. Clint is a soldier; he's always been one, & he will continue to be one. War is his business, death is his motivation. As a mercenary he has a repuation for being ruthless & efficient, he gets his work done & he doesn't get caught. There are things he regrets, things he hides from, but this is the life he chose, the life that chose him. Clint Barton was made to be this way, to kill & steal & lie & play the game of war. It's who he is.
JUST SHOT A MAN DOWN.
After getting out of prison for a crime he didn't commit Clint decides to exact revenge on the very people he had once trusted with his life. With the help of the Polish Mafia he hunts down his old associates in Germany & Russia, hoping to shake the mercenary underworld to its very core & get the justice he sorely desires.
EVERYBODY KNOWS I CAN'T PLAY NICE.
Soldiers are the ones who fight, leaders are the ones who decide what to fight, & Clint is no longer a soldier. Now he is a more than a simple mercenary, he is a man who leads, a man who directs, who picks the wars he wants to be a part of. His legacy is one of blood & betrayal, his history a whispered rumor no one can be certain of. All anyone knows is that he has killed to be where he is today, & he would kill again to keep the power he has obtained. He rules his empire with an iron fist, & no one dares cross him.

SHIELD fell, superheroes became villains in the public eye, & the peace that the Avengers had maintained for so long was lost for good. The future became uncertain. The world grew darker. Everything changed overnight, a new reality dawning in the face of choas. Now the war is Clint's to fight, his life now threatened by a new effort to hunt down the 'heroes' that mingled with society. This time around he can't deny his skills or who he is, he has to fight, or else lose everything he knows.
DRAGON AGE.
Clint Barton is a mercenary, an assassin, & a legend all in one. No one knows who he is, & no one dares to ask. They say he's a bastard, or the son of a magister, or a disgraced chevalier, or an ex-Antivan Crow. They say he can shoot a bullseye from a thousand paces & outshoot even the most skilled Dalish archer. They say a lot of things about him, but no one really knows for sure. He follows no lord, he picks his own battles, & he is as fair a fighter as he is a ruthless warrior. He is a simple man, unassuming, & he carries a bow carved of horn. He is a wanderer, an archer, & a mercenary. He is many things, & not many other things, but they call him Clint Barton, not even knowing if that is his true name.
ASSASSINS CREED.
He has the blood of assassins in his veins, or so Clint Barton has been told. No one important, they've promised, at least no one important enough to make him valuable. They told him that some of his ancestors were assassins, a secretive order at constant war with the templars. Or so they say. They being, well, the assassins. & it was enough to convince him that maybe, just maybe, he could be an assassin to. & that's what they were trying to convince him. So now he is an assassin, though modern; he works with the brotherhood, training & learning & running & traveling & even more running. He's a wanted man now, wanted by Abstero. Wanted dead, not alive. But Clint is convinced enough to continue fighting with the assassins, to follow their creed & learn their history & kill people when they ask him to. & they have, & will, ask him to.
GAME OF THRONES.
In a world of lords & conpiracy, betrayal & war, a mercenary is a very busy individual. For the right price they will fight your battles, kill your enemies, & strike fear in the hearts of your citizens. They are bloody & ruthless & wartorn & dangerous. Barton is such an individual, marked by war & grief, scarred by battle & hatred, forged in the fire of burning battlefields. They call him The Hawk, his precision & ruthlessness akin to that of a hawk on the hunt. They say his aim is true, that his blade & arrows are as sharp as talons, & just as dangerous. He fights battles for lords & kings, he wages wars for those who would lead a charge but not run with it. Barton is a mercenary first & foremost, a man of morals last.
WITCHER.
Clint is a mercenary, assassin, & bounty hunter, among other things. He has fought many wars, killed many people, & drank a lot of beer. He is skilled with a sword & he's a reasonable hunter, he can defend himself when the need arises, & he can think for himself. Clint isn't a witch hunter, or a soldier, or even a witcher, but he knows what he's doing & he knows he can do it well. & that's all that matters to him.
DISHONORED.
Barton used to be a noble name in Dunwall; the family had an estate, servants, land, & money. They were loyal bannermen of the Kaldwin throne, charming & brave & known for their empathy. Until the rat plague brought the city of Dunwall to its knees, devastating the court, spreading madness from family to family. Clint's father, Lord Barton, went mad with grief after losing his wife to the plague, banishing his eldest son, turning on his youngest, & eventually ending his own life. The Barton estate fell long before the empress was murdered, they said Lord Barton haunted the halls of his home, a weeper both in mind & his last stages of grief. Clint left Dunwall, his family gone & his name sullied, turning to a life outside of court, a long ways from home. Rumor stated that the eldest son had joined the Whalers, & the youngest, Clint, had been taken at sea. Yet, after Delilah Kaldwin's coup was thwarted by the true empress Emily Kaldwin Clint Barton returned to Dunwall, worse for wear but alive, & changed. Many years had passed since his family's estate had fallen, & time had made of him a man of means, clinging to what remained of his honor. & thus, his noble goal, to regain what his father had lost all those years ago.

In a galaxy far, far away... Clint Barton is a bounty hunter, hired to hunt down individuals, or otherwise hunt down individuals to turn in. For the most part he doesn't pick sides, doesn't show bias, & he definitely tries not to form opinions about those he hunts.
PERCY JACKSON.
The father Clint Barton had known was an abusive drunk, a man who cared little for his wife & children; that was the father he remembered, the parent who had scarred him in more ways than one. But that was not his true blood, no his real father was of a different kind entirely, someone he wouldn't learn of until he was much older: the Greek god, Apollo. Taken to Camp Half-Blood much later than typical, Clint was first believed to be the son of Hermes, but his skill with archery quickly proved otherwise. Now he knows his true parentage, & has learned to live as a demigod.
SUPERNATURAL.
Like most, Clint grew up outside the realm of knowing about the supernatural world coexisting with his own, it wasn't until he was much older that he was exposed to the darkness, & later recruited as a hunter. Clint lives his life as best he can, traveling & hunting & trying to save his own soul just as he tries to spare the souls of others.
STRANGER THINGS.
After several years of service in the military Clint Barton found himself haunted & exhausted, ready to retire somewhere quiet & civilian. That place was Hawkins, Indiana. After selling his childhood home & moving out of the city Clint decided to join the police force, & found himself a new job as a police officer in the peaceful community. Until it wasn't peaceful anymore, until strange things began to occur.
RUNNING WITH THE WOLVES.
After years of being followed, investigated, & tracked down like a dog SHIELD has finally caged Clint. Now there is no deal to be made, no way out. The mercenary Clint Barton has finally been caught, & he will pay for that mistake. SHIELD wants him as an asset, & with no other choice he agrees. Under constant watch he does what he is told to do, is given direction & follows it to the best of his ability. He doesn't like the new life, the new rules to follow, but he has no choice but to cooperate.
& I HOLD A SWORD TO GUIDE ME.
Once Abstergo had just been an employer; Clint had followed his orders, had gotten paid, & never questioned it once. It was good money, & his clients were always discreet. But every job, every kill, was just an interview for something bigger, darker, & when the truth is finally revealed even he can't deny it's an interesting deal to make. The Templars are Abstergo, & they want him on their side in the war against the Assassin Brotherhood. Clint takes the offer, & the next thing he knows he's working for Otso Berg in Sigma Team, a task-force set upon hunting Assassins & ancient artifacts alike for Abstergo.
I TRUST NOBODY & NOBODY TRUSTS ME.
Maybe once Clint had been a noble, son of House Trevelyan, but that is a life he had left behind many years ago. Now he is Clint Barton, a mercenary & assassin for hire, a simple man of simple means fighting wars for people like his family, people who were too high & too might to get their hands dirty. When he is hired by the Chantry to be a neutral guard at the Conclave he knows it will be easy money, until an explosion destroys the Temple of Sacred Ashes, leaving him the sole survivor of a mysterious attack that leaves a hole in the sky & a mark upon his hand. Taken by the Inquisition he works as an agent, closing rifts & recruiting others to their cause, until he is named Inquisitor, until he is no longer the simple mercenary Clint Barton, but the son of a dead bloodline, Clint Trevelyan.

Vampires a creature of habit: they feed on the blood & souls of the living, & fear the light of day. Clint Barton hasn't been a vampire very long, but he knows how it works, & honestly he feels nothing about the truth of it. He lives a normal life as a mercenary, just he isn't as normal as most believe. He still has honor, & he believes in what he does, but he also carries an unsatisfiable thirst, & hidden power to obtain it.
MEET ME ON THE BATTLEFIELD.
Clint Barton is just a man, another soldier sworn to service & the protection of freedom & justice. This is the life he lives, one of following orders & waking nightmares, of blood & bullets & everything between. It is all he knows, & it is all he cares to know. For once in his life he has meaning, he feels like he knows what he is doing, what he is capable of. For once he feels like he has a family, & he would die for any of his fellow soldiers. He would die for a dream of freedom he hadn't felt until now.
TEENAGERS SCARE THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF ME.
It has been years since his parents died, leaving Clint & his brother orphans. In the end, they found themselves a life in the circus, living the dream of every child: a life of adventure. But, life in the circus isn't as wonderful as most believe. It is tiring, difficult work that leaves Clint bitter & his brother a criminal. He's just a teenager but he knows more of the world than most, & he carries the weight of it on his shoulders. Clint Barton is a carnie: an archer & a thief, among other things -- an orphan & loner more than anything.

Death is an old friend of Clint Barton, in fact it is an eternal part of himself. Because Clint Barton isn't alive or dead, he simply is, a being of the realm between existence & nothingness. Some may call him a demon, others refer to him as a reaper, but most certianly he is a creature of chaos & darkness, & he exists to kill all that is good.
